Wales will hope to get their first World Cup win at this tournament when they face local rivals England in their third and final group B game in Qatar.
While England won their first game against Iran 6-2 but played a goalless draw against the USA, Wales were unlucky, having picked a point in their two group-stage matches following their 2-0 loss to Iran.
The Three Lions can seal progress into the round of 16 with a draw, while Wales knows a win is non-negotiable. A draw in the group’s second game between Iran and USA will favour Wales the more if they can secure victory.
It’s the first time both sides will be meeting since their friendly international at Wembley stadium in October 2020, but records don’t help the Welsh as they are winless in their last seven games in all competitions and winless in eleven clashes against England.
Meanwhile, England has the most 0-0 draws at the World Cup compared to any team, with 12 of them. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising that the team was booed in the last game because of its lacklustre performance.
Pundits have thus called for Gareth Southgate to deploy Phil Foden to help the team become more flexible and expressive.
However, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has stated that the team’s poor performances will be forgotten if the performance in the subsequent games improves.
He also stated that the whole team is aware of the displeasure of the fans with their performances.
“I feel like if we play well in the next game, that USA game will be forgotten. It’s not a nice feeling. But to be honest, we don’t need fans to boo us to know we have not played well. It was a feeling that was mutual among the group – that we could have done better.” Rashford said.
