Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen scored an amazing late strike which gave Napoli a crucial win over Roma and strengthened their grip at the top of the Serie A table.
Roma welcomed Napoli at a sold-out Stadio Olimpico — a game that was important to both teams.
Jose Mourinho’s men had the opportunity to move to within a point of Napoli if they had emerged victorious. Nonetheless, it was Napoli who got the all-important goal they needed to stay on top of the Italian Serie A log. Napoli also extended their 100 percent unbeaten record in the league.
In the first half, both teams created opportunities, but neither was able to find the back of the net.
Luciano Spalletti’s side thought they had a penalty in the 37th minute when Tanguy Ndombele fell down in the penalty area after a challenge from Rui Patricio. However, after a check by the video assistant referee (VAR), it was correctly overturned.
In the second half, the visitors started on the front foot and were able to muster two good chances.
Juan Jesus’ shot from close range in the 61st minute went wide as he looked to score against his former club. Eight minutes later, Victor Osimhen sliced a low effort narrowly wide.
Finally, the opening and winning goal came in the 81st minute when Osimhen showcased his brilliance.
Matteo Politano’s long ball over the top went past Chris Smalling and fell to the Nigerian forward, who played a shot on the half-volley from a difficult angle into the opposite side of the net.
The result sees Napoli regain their three point lead at the top of Serie A ahead of AC Milan, who are behind them. Napoli are in terrific form this season and have now won 11 games in a row in all competitions.
The results also mean that Roma missed an opportunity to move back into the top four and will be low on morale ahead of their crucial Europa League match against HJK Helsinki on Thursday.
