Van Dijk’s Last-Gasp Header Keeps Liverpool’s Title Hopes on Track

Virgil van Dijk delivered a dramatic late winner at Anfield on Sunday, propelling Liverpool to a crucial 2-1 victory over West Ham and moving them within touching distance of the Premier League title.

The win means Arne Slot’s side now needs just two more victories to secure a record-equalling 20th English league title, drawing them level with arch-rivals Manchester United. Liverpool sits 13 points clear at the top with six games to go, firmly in control of the title race.

It was a tense affair that almost turned disastrous for the home team. Luis Diaz opened the scoring in the 18th minute, courtesy of a pinpoint cross from Mohamed Salah, who recently ended speculation about his future by signing a new two-year deal. The Egyptian winger’s assist marked his 45th goal involvement this season, setting a new record for a 38-game Premier League campaign, according to Opta.

West Ham, however, refused to back down. Mohammed Kudus rattled the crossbar in the first half, and Jarrod Bowen was denied by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson in a one-on-one after the break. Their persistence paid off in the 86th minute when Andrew Robertson inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, leveling the score at 1-1.

Just three minutes later, Anfield erupted. Captain Van Dijk rose high to meet a corner, heading home the decisive goal in the 89th minute to restore Liverpool’s lead and secure all three points.

The result was especially significant as second-placed Arsenal dropped points on Saturday, drawing 1-1 with Brentford. Liverpool could potentially be crowned champions as early as next Sunday if Arsenal loses to Ipswich earlier in the day and they win their own fixture.

The week has been one of jubilation for Liverpool fans—not only for their team’s continued success on the pitch but also for Salah’s contract extension. The talisman was given a rousing ovation when he left the field late in the game, a testament to his enduring influence at the club.

Meanwhile, West Ham’s defeat saw them drop to 17th place, level on points with Wolves but behind on goal difference. Both teams still need five more points to ensure Premier League survival.

As Liverpool marches toward a historic league triumph, Van Dijk’s late heroics might just be remembered as the moment that sealed it.
