Portugal’s head coach Fernando Santos showered praise on talisman striker Cristiano Ronaldo after the team’s captain scored a brace in their second match against Switzerland at Estádio José Alvalade, Lisbon on Sunday.
William Carvalho opened the scoring for the hosts as he found the back of the net in the 15th minute of play. Subsequently, Ronaldo, who was benched in the last game against Spain and came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute, showed his class as he scored in the 35th and 39th minute.
Joao Cancelo scored for the home team in the 68th minute to put the game to bed. Santos was delighted with the performance of his team as they dominated the contest. Portugal took a total of 10 shots on target whereas Switzerland could only manage a solitary attempt on goal.
When Santos was asked about Ronaldo by SportTV (h/t OJogo), he said: “What else can I say? He’s the best player in the world. It’s all been said.”
With a brace, Ronaldo was able to take his International goals tally to 117, which is the most among the active players in the game.
Ronaldo was delighted with his personal and team’s performance and took to Instagram to share a post after their dominating win.
“A very important victory in our journey, a lot of pride and confidence in this group, a lot of strength to give the Portuguese what we so desire: victories and convincing performances. It seems that the season is ending, but in fact… this is just beginning! ??????” the Portuguese star wrote.
It was a complete performance from Portugal and they will look to continue the good show in the upcoming matches. Portugal will face the Czech Republic on Thursday (Friday, 12:15 am IST) at the same venue.
