Eventually, yet surprising, the rematch of the 2023 UEFA Champions League final turned out to be an anti-climax as the Cityzens were made toothless by the reigning Italian Champions on a European night that saw thirteen goals scored from the six-match centers as opposed to Tuesday, where twenty-eight goals were put in the net across six venues.
At the Etihad, it was a battle between two undefeated sides in their respective leagues, trying to outwit one another in a bid to get their campaign in Europe to a fascinating start.
Back in 2023, it took City an hour and eight minutes to break the deadlock in a cagey tie in Istanbul, and Wednesday’s fixture suggested a recurrence of a similar ninety minutes.
With Inter Milan’s prolific striker – Lautaro Martinez, on the bench, Marcus Thuram was called upon by Simone Inzaghi to lead the line for the Nerazurri, and he was the first to fire a lifeless attempt straight into the hands of City’s Brazilian shot-stopper, Ederson.
At the opposite end of the pitch, Erling Haaland was seen floating a fragile header at Yann Sommer as both Premier League and Calcio champions labored to create chances.
It was the visitors who showed a lot of intent with their series of counterattacks, especially when Carlos Augusto forced a smart save from Ederson before halftime.
For City, they had their fair share of exciting moments in the game, too, especially when Phil Phoden replaced the injured Belgian engine room, Kevin De Bruyne.
With twenty minutes played after the restart, none of the sides produced a shot on goal at each other’s defense, prompting Inzaghi to introduce Lautaro Martinez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan as the hunger for a breakthrough that never the way of either sides.
With the dryness from both sides, City now have just five wins from fourteen outings against Italian opposition. For Inter, they remain undefiled in five matches so far despite playing very far their expected quality.
