It is the off-season and most clubs in Europe have already started looking around for players. Some top teams like Manchester City, Liverpool, etc have already signed some big names. Transfer Insider, Dean Jones believes that Manchester United should be the next team showing some intent to get quality players despite not having Champions League football at the moment.
Jones believes that there is a genuine chance for Manchester United with the influence of erik ten Hag can secure the signature of out of favour Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong. the Catalans are looking to free up some funds and De Jong as a player is not someone who seamlessly fits in Xavi’s midfield trio especially with new players coming in like Franck Kessie. So the Catalans are looking to free up some funds as they aim to get Robert Lewandowski and have eyes on Sevilla’s star defender Jules Kounde.
The 25-year-old Dutchman may be out of favour at Barcelona but he can be the midfield lynchpin for the Red Devils as his performances even for Barcelona have been top notch. He played his best football under the current United manager and fans along with Dean Jones believe that Erik ten Hag can again bring him back to form.
Therefore looking at the overall situation with the former Ajax star, Dean Jones feels that it will give a bad look on United if they fail to secure this signing of Frenkie De jong as he is someone that they need desperately as they have a shortage of centre midfielders who can bring stability and also can give cover to their backline.
“If they don’t get him at this point, this is actually a bit embarrassing. Barcelona now willing to sell, the player’s head now getting around the fact that he’s going to be moving. And it would be good for Barca too. This would be the second-highest transfer fee they’ve ever received for a player. So, it’s a massive deal for everyone, and one that I think suits everyone,” Dean Jones shared his opinion on the transfer and the chances for Barcelona to earn more funds.
De Jong has made 46 appearances for Barcelona in the last season and have four years left in his contract. He joined the club back in 2019 from Ajax after a sensational performance from that Ajax squad under the guidance of Erik ten Hag.
While De Jong’s move away from Camp Nou looks very much possible there are several clubs lining up to secure the signature of the 25-year-old centre midfielder. So it will only get tougher for United as they wont be able to offer Champions League football which is an important factor for many players though they have the convincing factor of their new manager Ten Hag. So it will be interesting to see where the Dutch midfielder ends up this summer.
