Tottenham Hotspur boosted their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League after beating Arsenal 3-0 in the North London derby played on Thursday evening at the new White Hart Lane Stadium.
Before the game, Spurs were four points behind the Gunners after a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, while the Gunners were able to get a victory against Leeds United at the weekend.
However, with three more matches left, both sides faced each other on Thursday in a match that many expected to be the decider in who makes the UEFA Champions League between both sides.
Arsenal are in fourth place while Tottenham Hotspur sits in fifth with 4 points before the game.
Tottenham striker Harry Kane scored the game’s opening goal from the penalty spot in the 24th minute of the first half, and he made it 2-0 before the halftime break. In between his two goals, Arsenal’s defender Rob Holding was sent off for a second bookable offense.
Meanwhile, South Korean forward Son Heung-Min scored a third immediately after the break to ensure that 10-man Arsenal must win their last two matches of the season or better Tottenham’s results to assure their qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Nevertheless, Arsenal remain in fourth position with 66 points, one more than Tottenham in fifth with 65 points. Tottenham’s last two games include a tie against Burnley at White Hart Lane before playing against relegated Norwich city on the last day of the Premier League at Carrow Road.
Mikel Arteta Arsenal will now play against Newcastle away from home at the weekend before their final game of the season against everything who are battling for survival.
Manchester City are still gunning for the title with three points ahead of Liverpool with two games left to play. Pep Guardiola’s side has 89 points from 36 games, while Liverpool has 86 points from their six games as well.
