Tottenham and Liverpool clash in Carabao Cup semifinal, while Arsenal lose to Newcastle

    January 8, 2025

Tottenham Hotspur will be seeking to reach their first League Cup final since 2020/21 when they face Liverpool in the semifinal. However, Ange Postecoglou’s side will have to overcome a significant challenge against the runaway Premier League leaders. Spurs have been in freefall since their 4-3 quarter-final victory against Manchester United, posting a four-match winless run (D1, L3) amidst a crippling injury and illness crisis.

The injury crisis has forced Spurs to move swiftly in the January transfer market, and they have already made their first signing. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky has joined the club and may make his debut in the semifinal. Kinsky’s arrival could help Spurs improve their dismal defensive record, having kept just one clean sheet across their last 11 competitive outings.

Liverpool, meanwhile, proved they are not invincible after failing to see out a lead in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United over the weekend. Despite the setback, the Reds remain the team to beat in the Premier League, and their League Cup record is equally impressive. As the current holders, Liverpool have not had an easy run to the semifinal, knocking out three Premier League sides without keeping a clean sheet.

The Reds’ attacking prowess has been impressive, scoring over three times per League Cup game on average this season. This record, combined with their imperious away record, will make them a formidable opponent for Spurs. Liverpool have remained unbeaten in all competitive trips since April (W12, D4), and this streak will boost their confidence ahead of the trip to Tottenham.

The semifinal clash between Tottenham and Liverpool promises to be an exciting encounter, with both teams eager to reach the final. While Spurs will be seeking to overcome their injury crisis and reach their first League Cup final in three years, Liverpool will be looking to continue their dominance in the competition and defend their title.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the first semifinal on Tuesday at Emirates Stadium, with Alex Isak and Anthony Gordon getting goals in each half for the Maggies. The Gunners will have the opportunity to turn things around in the second leg in February.
