Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has been super impressed by Croatia international Mateo Kovacic. He feels that the midfielder is a wonderkid and is capable of doing great things.
Kovacic has been a vital cog in Tuchel’s system since joining the club from Real Madrid back in 2018. The Croatian initially came to Stamford Bridge on loan before joining the Blues permanently in the following season.
Kovacic alongside players like N’Golo Kante and Jorginho has flourished a lot. He has been a first team regular ever since his arrival at the club.
However, the Croatian midfielder is now gearing up to face his former side, Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. Ahead of the big clash, Thomas Tuchel praises the midfielder and feels that he has already proven his credentials in the Chelsea blue.
“I think he is still completing it. He looks like a wonderkid in training, in some exercises. Today he had an outstanding training session and is a fantastic character. A lovely guy, a humble guy, and so interested in sports. He’s so happy to train and deliver for the team. It’s a true pleasure.”
Tuchel shared how he was happy with Kovacic’s progress even at Real Madrid. He is happy that the Croatian joined Chelsea and is crucial to Chelsea’s plans this season.
“Even at Real Madrid, I was aware of his talent and I felt there was a next step coming. I am very happy that he is my player and plays a lot this season. He is crucial to us on the pitch and off the pitch in the way he behaves.”
Chelsea recently lost 4-1 against Brentford as Thomas Tuchel tried out Ruben Loftus-Cheek in midfield. But the idea of resting Kovacic did not work out well for the German tactician. The reigning Champions League winners will be hoping to come back after their defeat to Brentford and will be keen to turn the table around against Real Madrid.
Kovacic will most likely lineup alongside N’Golo Kante as Tuchel needs the midfield control against Los Blancos. Chelsea have won their last clash against Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals. They eventually went on to win the Champions League last season.
