PSG Saint-Germain head coach Christophe Galtier was delighted and credited his players after they won Ligue 1 title for the record 11th time. The Parisians secured a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday to move four points clear of second-placed Lens with a game to go.
PSG’s talisman Lionel Messi scored in the 59th minute of the game after an assist from Kylian Mbappe. Subsequently, former PSG forward Kevin Gameiro scored the equalizer for Strasbourg to help his team gain one point.
Messi bagged another record as he broke Cristiano Ronaldo’s scoring record in Europe’s top five leagues. This was Messi’s 496th career league goal in Europe as he continues to dominate in the continent.
PSG Saint-Germain also overtook Saint-Etienne, who have won Ligue 1 title on 10 occasions.
“Everything was not perfect, but this title belongs to the players. Being French champions is always something,” said coach Christophe Galtier.
“From a personal point of view, I appreciate it a lot.”
PSG president Nasser al-Khelaïfi said it is a historic moment for the club and feels it is a reward for all the hard work they have put in over the last decade.
“This is of course an historic moment for Paris Saint-Germain. This 11th French league title is the reward for all the hard work we have put in over the last 12 years,” said PSG president Nasser al-Khelaïfi, who has been in control since 2011.
“To make Ligue 1 history and overtake Saint-Etienne is a real source of pride.”
Meanwhile, it was the 43rd title for Messi for both club and country. The linchpin scored 16 goals and provided as many assists in 31 matches for PSG in the 2022-23 season. However, Messi is expected to leave the club after the conclusion of this season.
Sources have revealed Messi has an offer from Saudi Arabia, former club Barcelona and Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
Messi is expected to play his last match for PSG Saint Germain against Clermont Foot on Saturday night.
