Tennis icon Roger Federer received a fitting farewell after playing his last professional match with Rafael Nadal against the American pair of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe in the Laver Cup. Federer, regarded as one of the best tennis players of all time, could not hold back tears during the presentation ceremony and he was hailed by many sports personalities, including Lionel Messi, for his wonderful career.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni reckons Lionel Messi will receive a similar send-off when he will decide to call it a day on his illustrious career. Messi has achieved all the records in the books and he is regarded as one of the best of the current era.
Messi scored a brace against Jamaica on Tuesday and helped his team win by 3-0. With this win, Argentina’s unbeaten run extended to 35 matches.
Scaloni was quoted by Ole as saying: “This is how it happened with Federer, who retired and everyone was excited. And how many of us would like to see him play tennis again. It was wonderful … The same will happen with him (Messi) and much more because football generates something much stronger. That’s why let’s enjoy it …”
On the other hand, Messi recently turned 35 and it is expected that there is still some fuel left in his tank.
While discussing his future, Messi said (via ESPN): “I don’t know what I will do after the World Cup. I am thinking about what is coming. After Qatar I will have to reassess many things. It has been a while that I am happy here, since before winning the Copa. I am thankful for all this they make me feel every time I come to Argentina.”
“I don’t know, the truth is I don’t know. Let’s hope these go the best way possible. But for sure after the World Cup, many things will change.”
Meanwhile, Messi and co. will begin their FIFA World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22. Subsequently, they will take on Mexico and Poland in Group C of the tournament.
