Liverpool suffered a shocking 5-2 defeat against Real Madrid at Anfield in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. It was a thrilling match which saw the visitors come back from two goals down to eventually rip apart the Liverpool defense as the reigning La Liga champions were simply unstoppable.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was furious at the Reds, especially the defenders who had a very poor day at the office including Allison who was nowhere near his element. It was really a sensational performance from Real Madrid as Carragher also revealed that he had never seen a team rip apart Liverpool at Anfield like this.
Liverpool were quick to get off the block as Darwin Nunez handed them the early lead followed by a goal from Mohamed Salah who had scores to settle against the Spanish outfit. However things started to drift towards Real Madrid when Vinicius Jr. scored twice in a matter of ten minutes to restore parity before the halftime whistle.
Vinicius’ brace gave Real Madrid the momentum going into the halftime break and therefore Los Blancos returned with more determination and grit. The visitors started the second half with a goal as Eder Militao head home from a Luka Modric freekick. It was a defensive lapse from Liverpool as they left him open in the penalty area. Liverpool’s night went bad to worse when Karim Benzema also came up with a brace as Real Madrid simply toyed with the Liverpools defense in their home ground.
Carragher was simply embarrassed as he claimed that he has never seen a team like Real Madrid who came to Anfield and simply destroyed Liverpool. He was disappointed to the core during his analysis of the match in the post showof CBS Sports Golazo.
“First of all I must say what a performance by Real Madrid, to come to Anfield and do this. I’ve never seen a team come to Anfield in Europe that I can remember, that I have seen destroy Liverpool like that. That was shambolic from Liverpool, embarrassing,” the former Liverpool man stated.
He shared that there has been a lot of talk around the club and their current situation in the Premier League and their string of disappointing performances. But for them to show no fight in the second half was simply a disgrace according to Carragher.
“We’ve made excuses for them all season, why they haven’t done as well as they have done in previous seasons but..that was a disgrace, that second-half. To not even have a chance themselves, to not show any fight,” he added.
Jurgen Klopp’s men will have a mountain to climb in the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu as they will have to win by a difference of four goals to go through to the next round or atleast score three to force extratime.
