Ter Stegen Happy at Barcelona But Leaves Door Open for Future Return to Germany

    September 6, 2024

Barcelona captain and first-choice goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, has expressed his contentment with his current situation at the club but has not ruled out the possibility of a return to his homeland, Germany, in the future.

Speaking at a press conference earlier today, the 32-year-old discussed his long-term contract with Barcelona, his new role as Germany’s No. 1 goalkeeper, and his thoughts on working under new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.

Ter Stegen joined Barcelona in 2014 from Borussia Mönchengladbach and has since become an integral part of the Catalan club’s success. After the departure of Sergi Roberto this summer, the German international was named the club’s captain. Reflecting on his time in Spain, Ter Stegen emphasized how much he enjoys life in Catalonia, stating:

“I have a relatively long contract in Barcelona. I’m very happy there. My family is happy in Catalonia. I’m just looking forward to the season, that’s where my focus is.”

Despite his deep connection with Barcelona, Ter Stegen did not dismiss the possibility of a future return to Germany, leaving fans curious about what might come next. “You never know what will happen in the future,” he said. “I don’t know if playing in Germany will be a goal for me again in the future. We’ll see.”

The international retirement of Manuel Neuer has finally given Ter Stegen the opportunity to step up as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper, a role he had long coveted. Ter Stegen spent much of his international career in the shadow of Neuer, and while he expressed disappointment at not having been the primary option for the last decade, he handled it with professionalism.

“There are always moments when you think, ‘Phew, that was another blow’. In the end, the decision always went in Manu’s favour, but I dealt with it professionally. It was disappointing, of course, but you have to live with it,” Ter Stegen explained. “You should have this experience and accept it. In the end, it was worth it.”

He also acknowledged Neuer’s impressive career, saying: “My aim has always been to be number one… I had a goalkeeper in front of me in Manu who had an incredible career and always stood up to the pressure.”

Now that Ter Stegen has secured the No. 1 spot for Germany, he is focused on the future, eager to guide a new generation of talent both in Barcelona and for the national team.

Ter Stegen also took the opportunity to speak highly of Barcelona’s new manager, Hansi Flick. Since taking over the reins of the club, Flick has had a positive impact, and the German shot-stopper seems to appreciate his direct approach.

“He has a very clear vision of what he wants, what he expects from me,” Ter Stegen said, praising Flick for his leadership and the team’s early successes under his guidance. “You can’t always predict that in advance. So I’m very happy for him that things are going the way they are now.”

Despite the promising start, Ter Stegen warned that there is still much work ahead for the team. He emphasized the importance of the senior players stepping up to guide the younger squad members, mentioning the need for leaders like Robert Lewandowski, Jules Koundé, and himself to set an example.

“We have a good team, a very, very young team… So it’s about the players we have, whether it’s Lewy, me, Jules or Rapha, having the ability to lead and guide this team,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to helping Barcelona remain competitive at the highest levels.

While Ter Stegen has expressed his happiness at Barcelona, his comments about a potential future in Germany have sparked speculation. With a contract that runs until 2028, he still has plenty of time left with the Spanish giants. However, given his admiration for his homeland, a return to Germany—whether for club or simply to reconnect with his roots—remains a possibility.

For now, Ter Stegen’s focus is on continuing his stellar performances for Barcelona and establishing himself as Germany’s undisputed No. 1 goalkeeper after years of waiting. His leadership, both on and off the pitch, has never been more crucial as he navigates a new era in his career.
