David De Gea has been a polarizing figure at Manchester United for quite some time now. On his day, he can be one of the best goalkeepers in the world, pulling off incredible saves that keep his team in games they might otherwise have lost. However, there is always a sense of unease when he takes to the field, as it seems as if he could go from hero to villain in the blink of an eye.
It’s this inconsistency that puts United fans on edge whenever De Gea is between the posts. There are times when he appears almost unbeatable, making save after save and keeping clean sheets against some of the toughest opposition around. But then there are other times when he seems to lack focus or makes uncharacteristic errors that put his team in trouble.
Since Ten Hag’s arrival at the Red Devils, the coach has worked with De Gea to improve his footwork, and yesterday he came to his defense for the progress he has made in this regard since the start of the season. “Today I cannot excuse him, but he has had very good games this season,” the Dutchman began by saying.
According to the latest reports, Manchester United are close to agreeing to a contract extension with David de Gea.
In this regard, Ten Hag had already commented last year that he was happy with the work of the Spanish goalkeeper.
“In the background, of course, we have our strategies, how to deal with it. But it is quite clear now already and I have emphasized it several times.
“I am really happy with David; he is a great goalkeeper. He is only 31, he is fit, he can progress even more, he was already impressive for Man United and will be in the future as well.”
