Stoke City manager Michael O’Neill is considering a summer move for former Celtic target David Turnbull.
It has been understood that Motherwell have been made aware of O’Neill’s interest in the youngster whose dream £3million move to Parkhead collapsed 12 months ago after doctors discovered a potentially career-ending knee injury during a medical. It was a devastating experience as the Scotland Under-21 star’s proposed £3.25m move to Celtic collapsed last summer when his medical detected a serious knee injury.
After surgery, he only returned to first-team action a month before the coronavirus pandemic froze all football.
Neil Lennon remains interested in Turnbull but – with this season’s transfer window set to be extended into October – the Celtic boss is not believed to be in a rush to make another bid this summer.
It’s understood that Lennon would rather monitor Turnbull’s form when the new campaign begins next month before making a final decision.
But O’Neill could try to get in first after spelling out to his club’s fans his intention to recruit a number of cut-price emerging talents from the Scottish top flight.
Newcastle gaffer Steve Bruce is another huge admirer of the midfielder who will be 21 on Friday.
But with Bruce’s position at St James’ Park uncertain amid ongoing takeover talks, his longer-term transfer plans are understood to have been placed on hold.
It comes after the Turnbull penned a new deal earlier this month that’s set to keep him at Fir Park until 2022.
But Motherwell coach, Stephen Robinson still expects a fierce battle for his star man’s signature when the transfer window opens again.
He said: “We are excited to have a player of this quality playing for Motherwell, and commiting to the club, but I still believe there will be lots of interest in David.
David Turnbull joined Motherwell Youth Academy eleven years ago, and made his debut for Motherwell first team on 10 February 2018. He scored 15 goals in 30 matches for Motherwell last season.
