AS Roma showed class against their Rome rivals, SS Lazio as they won the derby 3-0 on Sunday night at the Stadio Olimpico.
It was a good outing for English man Tammy Abraham, who bagged a brace in the opening 22 minutes.
Lorenzo Pellegrini’s astonishing free-kick stole the headlines for Jose Mourinho’s men. To simply put, Lazio were simply not at their best at the Derby della Capitale.
With the win, The Gialorossi have leapfrogged their rivals into fifth place. The result of the game of Atalanta could see them drop to sixth.
With a full squad to choose from, Mourinho had the last laugh in a local derby, where only one point separated the teams. Maurizio Sarri’s men had won 3-2 during their first meeting earlier this season.
Within 60 seconds, Roma took the lead. Pellegrini’s in-swinging corner bounced off the crossbar and ricocheted in off Tammy Abraham’s crotch from a yard to guide it in. Thomas Strakosha was totally at sea.
Despite having much of the ball, Lazio could not produce anything against the clinical Giallorossi. They doubled their lead when Rick Karsdorp’s shot across the face of the goal from the right got an acrobatic tap in at the far post from Abraham.
Pellegrini, who was a doubt for the match due to tonsillitis, scored with an astounding free-kick to round up the game. The Italian international, from 25 metres, bent out the ball that flew into the near top corner despite Strakosha getting a fingertip to it.
In the other Serie A game, Juventus returned to winning ways against relegation-threatened Salernitana.
The host went into the lead through Paulo Dybala, who made an ideal return to the starting XI.
Dusan Vlahovic’s header doubled their lead within 30 minutes to sweep Salernitana aside.
The win leaves them within a point of Inter Milan in third place.
Inter had earlier in the day played out a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina.
