Manchester City midfielder Rodri may miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during his team’s Premier League match against Arsenal.
The injury occurred in the 21st minute of Sunday’s match, following a collision with Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey. Rodri, a vital cog in City’s recent successes, was forced off the pitch early, sparking concerns over the severity of the injury.
“Rodri is strong. He leaves the pitch in this action because he felt something, otherwise Rodri stays there,” Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola stated after the match.
Reports emerged on Monday that the Spanish international’s injury could keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season, which will be a significant blow for both the player and his club.
Rodri’s absence would come as a huge setback for Manchester City, as the midfielder has been central to their dominance in English and European football. The 28-year-old Spaniard was instrumental in City’s historic treble-winning 2022-23 season, scoring the decisive goal in the UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan, and helping the club secure their fourth consecutive Premier League title last season.
This season, however, has not gone as planned for the Spaniard. Rodri played just 66 minutes of league football due to an earlier hamstring injury, which kept him out of City’s opening matches against Chelsea and Ipswich. Although he returned to action as a substitute in City’s third game against West Ham United, he only played 45 minutes in City’s 2-1 victory over Brentford before earning his first league start of the season against Arsenal.
Despite his recent injury troubles, Rodri’s importance to Manchester City and Spain cannot be overstated. He was named the Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024, leading Spain to a record fourth European Championship title. Since joining City from Atlético Madrid in 2019, Rodri has made 260 appearances, tallying 26 goals and 30 assists across all competitions.
With Manchester City already facing a congested fixture list across domestic and European competitions, Rodri’s extended absence could have serious implications for their title defense this season. His leadership and skill in the middle of the pitch will be difficult to replace as City navigates through what promises to be a challenging campaign ahead.
