Tottenham Hotspur held Rangers in an entertaining action in the Europa League that saw both British teams play out a 1-1 draw as Ange Postecoglou returned to Scotland after leaving their rivals Celtic.
The result leaves Rangers, who almost ran away with a win in eighth position – the last spot for automatic qualification for the last 16 while Spurs share the same point with them at 9th.
Spurs went into the tie on the back of a recent loss to Chelsea, as they continue their struggle with form and injury-hit players. The Australian was fortunate to leave without defeat after an unconvincing performance that leaves them winless in five games.
Substitute Dejan Kulusevski, who was brought on at halftime, rescued the visitors from a defeat when he fired into the bottom right corner at the end of a well-worked move.
Rangers had the chance to secure the maximum points but were denied by a superb late save from Fraser Forster. Cyriel Dessers had a goal before then had a goal ruled out for offside.
Rangers took the lead when Hamza Igamane tucked home from James Tavernier’s smart pass behind the Tottenham defense two minutes into the second half.
With a better half to their credit, Rangers deserved to be ahead, but Forster tipped over Nedim Bajrami’s shot and denied Vaclav Cerny twice.
The visitors’ single shot on target in the first half was a tame effort from close range – as Timo Werner misfired, showing lack of confidence in front of goal.
With this performance, Rangers later lost John Souttar to an injury and will head into Sunday’s League Cup final against Celtic with confidence after another promising display.
