German side Frankfort has emerged as the 2021/2022 UEFA Europa League winners after beating Scottish side Glasgow Rangers on penalties to lift the trophy in the 2022 final of the UEFA Europa League that was played at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in Sevilla.
Both sides started the final game slowly after testing each other in the first half without success. Rangers were targeting their first ever UEFA Europa League title, while Frankfurt was hoping for their 1st European trophy since 1980.
While Frankfurt got the better of West Ham United in the semi-finals, Rangers knocked out RB Leipzig to reach the final.
Rangers, who lost the Scottish League title to Celtic, got into the lead through Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo in the 57th minute.
However, Colombian forward Rafael Borre scored his fourth Europa League goal in 13 Europa League games this season in the 69th minute to pull the Germans back on level terms.
Neither side could find the winner in regular time and the extra time, and it went straight to penalties, and Frankfurt won 5-4 with former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey missing what was eventually the key spot-kick.
The win means that Frankfurt, despite finishing 11th in the Bundesliga, will play UEFA Champions League football next season.
Up next for Rangers is a Scottish Cup final at the weekend, with their manager Giovanni van Bronkhorst hoping for a better result.
“I’m very disappointed. We were very close. In the end, the emotions go from high to very low. We need to make sure we’re ready on Saturday (the Scottish Cup final). I said to the players we came so far; we deserved it. I’m very proud of them. We had challenges through injuries.” He said.
