New Toffees boss Rafa Benitez is under great pressure. On the one hand, the fans are not very happy with his appointment.
Everton fans do not forgive Benitez for comments he made when he was Liverpool’s boss. This has put Benitez on the ropes to win the favor of the fans.
On the other hand, the club’s hierarchy is focused on getting some silverware next season. Club owner Farhad Moshiri has made this very clear in the interviews he has given.
The problem is that many do not believe that Benitez can achieve good results so quickly. The shadow of Carlo Ancelotti is still being felt at Goodison Park.
Ancelotti is a more accomplished and experienced manager than Benitez. The Italian was given a reasonable budget to work with. The best he achieved was 10th place in the Premier League in his two seasons with the club.
Benitez has tried to be pragmatic and lower expectations when asked if he can achieve results.
In an interview, he was asked is it possible to achieve good results this season? To which the Spaniard replied: “I would say yes. Will it be difficult? Yes, it will be difficult but you never know. The cup competitions, to be in Europe, depending on your belief, the way you work.
“So I don’t see why not, I don’t see why we can’t try to do our best in every competition if we can be sure we have a strong enough squad to do it. (In the interviews) they realised they could get an experienced manager who was competitive and can win things.”
Benitez will have to work with a smaller budget than Ancelotti had because of the fair play financial restrictions, and he will also have to deal with a hostile relationship with the fans. So he does not have an easy road ahead of him.
