Paris Saint German’s veteran custodian Keylor Navas who was formerly with Real Madrid has revealed that God guided him to Paris leaving the Spanish capital in 2019. The Costa Rican played pivotal roles in multiple Champions League wins but was reduced to only a backup for Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Navas joined Real Madrid from Levante in 2014 and enjoyed a great spell which was filled with trophies and success, he won the La Liga once and completed the three-peat of the Champions League with Los Blancos. But he had to bid Real Madrid farewell when Zinedine Zidane roped in former Chelsea man Thibaut Courtois.
In a recent interview with France Football, the 34-year old revealed his exit from Santiago Bernabeu as very complicated.
“There are times when you have to make decisions,” he said. “I have a great appreciation for Real Madrid and all the teammates who have treated me well. And of course [head coach Zinedine] Zidane, with whom we have won everything.
“We have a common history that will not leave our memory. But there are things that we do not control.
“I trusted in God, who guided me towards an exit from Real Madrid.”
The Costa Rican custodian has already settled to life at Paris where he guided them to the Ligue 1 title last season and the Parisiens also reached the Champions League finals where they eventually lost to Bayern Munich. Navas has a contract that runs till 2023 and feels that he is in good shape and wants to continue with PSG for many years.
“It’s clear I’m very happy here and I’ll stay as long as the club wants,” he said. “Of course, if they don’t want me any more, I’ll have to leave [laughs].
“But I’m very happy here, flourishing and I’m enjoying 100 per cent being in Paris. I want to play for a long time more at PSG because I feel good physically and mentally.”
PSG are in a spot of bother this season especially in their domestic league where Mauricio Pochettino’s men recently lost against league leaders Lille. Although PSG are three points behind Christophe Galtier’s Lille side and can pull it back within a few games. But their prime focus still remains on the Champions League.
