Pep Guardiola Signs One-Year Contract Extension with Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2025.

The deal, first reported by The Athletic, has yet to be confirmed by the club. However, multiple sources suggest Guardiola’s tenure at City will extend to a remarkable decade.

Guardiola, 53, joined City in 2016 and has cemented himself as one of the most successful managers in the club’s history. Under his leadership, City have claimed an astonishing 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles.

He has also guided them to numerous historic feats, such as achieving the Treble in the 2022-23 season – a rare combination of the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League – making City only the second English men’s team to accomplish this.

Additionally, Guardiola’s City became the first men’s team to secure four consecutive English top-flight titles and the only side to earn 100 Premier League points in a single campaign.

Guardiola’s current contract was set to expire at the end of the season. While details remain unclear, it has been suggested that the new deal might include an option for a second year.

Speaking earlier this year, Guardiola expressed mixed feelings about his future, saying he wanted to be “really convinced” any decision to stay would benefit the club.

The announcement comes as City endure an uncharacteristic dip in form. After a 2-1 loss to Brighton, their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions, Guardiola admitted: “Maybe after seven years winning six Premier Leagues, maybe one year another team deserve it.”

City currently sit second in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by five points.

The uncertainty surrounding Guardiola’s future has been linked to the team’s struggles, along with the looming disciplinary case involving 115 Premier League charges against the club for alleged rule breaches. Guardiola has consistently defended the club, urging critics to await a final decision before passing judgment.

Despite these challenges, Guardiola’s commitment signals confidence in City’s long-term prospects. His collaboration with outgoing director of football Txiki Begiristain has been instrumental in shaping City’s dominance, and his decision to stay could provide much-needed stability as the club navigates its current turbulence.

With this extension, Guardiola will cement his position as the Premier League’s longest-serving current manager, surpassing Jurgen Klopp following the latter’s departure from Liverpool earlier this year.
