Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has clarified that Kevin De Bruyne’s recent exclusion from the starting lineup is solely due to fitness issues, refuting claims of a personal conflict with the Belgian midfielder.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest, Guardiola addressed speculation about his relationship with the 33-year-old star.
“People say I’ve got a problem with Kevin. Do you think I like to not play with Kevin? No. Do you think I want him on the bench?” Guardiola said during a press conference. “The guy with the most talent in the final third — I don’t want that? He’s delivered the biggest success to this club.”
De Bruyne has been a key figure at City since joining in 2015, helping the club secure numerous trophies. However, injuries have plagued him in recent seasons. He suffered a pelvic injury during a Champions League match against Inter Milan on September 18 and has since made only substitute appearances in five of City’s last seven games.
Guardiola’s side is enduring its worst run under the Spaniard, going winless in seven games across all competitions. De Bruyne’s absence has been a significant blow, but Guardiola emphasized that the midfielder needs time to regain full fitness.
“He’s been five months injured last season and two months this year,” Guardiola explained. “He’s 33 years old. He needs time to find his best, step by step. Like last season, it has to come gradually. He’s desperate to help us, and I’m desperate to see him at his best.”
De Bruyne, whose contract expires at the end of the season, was also linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League earlier this year. Reflecting on the challenges of managing a player of his stature at this stage of his career, Guardiola added, “I’d love to have the Kevin in his prime, 26 or 27. He would love it too. But he’s not 26 anymore. It’s normal. He’s played 10 or 11 seasons with a lot of games, and injuries take a toll.”
Despite the setbacks, Guardiola remains optimistic about De Bruyne’s ability to contribute to the team. “He gives glimpses of brilliance that only he can have. But he needs to feel better physically. When that happens, he will be the player we all know,” he said.
As Manchester City looks to end its winless streak, Guardiola’s faith in De Bruyne’s recovery and contribution shows the player’s importance to the team, even as he navigates the challenges of age and fitness.
