Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has joined Everton as their new manager. On that occasion, former England international Paul Merson has lauded Lampard and has said that the former midfielder will be a great football manager for the Toffees.
Speaking on this topic, Merson started discussing the reason why his stint at Chelsea was such short-lived. He highlighted how Lampard’s over eagerness to win every match came back to haunt the former England international.
Apart from Lampard, Chelsea’s assistant coach Joe Edwards has also joined Everton after ending his stint at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking after Everton made the move official, Paul Merson analysed how the deal went for Lampard and also for the Toffees.
“I like it. I think it’s a good signing for Everton and I think he’s a good manager. At Chelsea, he tried to win football matches. Sometimes, might have been his Achilles heel.”
Merson highlighted how Lampard’s eagerness to win matches often led to his team being over attacking while the defence went up for a toss as they ended up losing those matches.
”I think of certain games at Stamford Bridge where it was nil-nil and the game was going nowhere and you thought, ‘not going to score in a month of Sundays’ – other managers would have maybe here shut up shop, a point’s a point,” Merson further added.
He then highlighted Frank Lampard’s attitude of putting in forwards to salvage a win but ended up losing the fixture by a close margin. “Frank would go for it, he’d change the team, he’d put forwards on and sometimes get beat one-nil and that was probably his Achilles heel.”
Nevertheless, Everton have made some good signings in the January transfer window. They have roped in former Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek and also former Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli.
The Toffees are 16th in the Premier League points table and with Lampard’s inclusion and some noteworthy signings in January they will hope to finish at least among the top 10 in the points table and continue that development into next season.
It will be interesting to see how Frank Lampard takes charge of Everton and guide them to greater heights. Lampard relishes working with younger players and therefore he will look to hand more chances to the talented youngsters. It will be interesting to see him implement his style of play.
