Jacob Bruun Larsen came back to haunt his former club with a late equalizer as Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw by TSG Hoffenheim at the Westfalenstadion on Sunday.
Borussia Dortmund’s inconsistent run of form continued on Sunday evening as they made it four games in a row without a win.
The Black and Yellows were held to a 1-1 draw by TSG Hoffenheim and now find themselves in eighth place in the Bundesliga standings.
Both teams were wasteful in front of goal in what was a cagey contest, with Jacob Bruun Larsen’s late equalizer canceling out Gio Reyna’s opener. A draw was a fair result in the end, as neither team did enough to deserve the three points.
Borussia Dortmund did not have to wait long for their first real chance of the game. And it arrived courtesy of some good play from Gio Reyna and Jamie Gittens. But luckily for Hoffenheim, Stanley Nsoki’s miscued clearance was saved by Oliver Baumann.
Hoffenheim also came close to scoring early on, but Max Moerstedt wasn’t able to find the target from close range.
At the half-hour mark, Borussia Dortmund was awarded a penalty as Serhou Guirassy was brought down inside the box. However, after a VAR check, the penalty was chalked off.
Maximilian Beier then came close to scoring against his former club, but Baumann came to Hoffenheim’s rescue once again.
There was nothing to separate the two sides going into the break, but it took Borussia Dortmund less than 60 seconds after the restart to take the lead.
And it was Gio Reyna who found the back of the net, finding the top corner with a fine effort from the edge of the box.
After missing a host of decent chances, Hoffenheim found a well-deserved equalizer in stoppage time, and it was former Borussia Dortmund winger Jacob Bruun Larsen who found the back of the net.
The Dane took advantage of some poor defending from a long throw-in before firing home from close range.
There was to be no winning goal, and Nuri Sahin will no doubt be frustrated with the way his team threw away two points late on. The result will come as another big blow to Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of finishing in the top four.
