Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen rescued the Pertonopei again on Monday to salvage a crucial point against Cagliari with a late equalizer.
The Nigerian striker ensured that Napoli left Sardinia with a point after a tough duel.
After a goalless first half, Partenopei went behind to their hosts thro8ugh a goal from Gaston Pereiro.
Their resilient spirit didn’t let them give up, and their hard work was rewarded with a goal. Osimhen bagged the equalizer when he headed home a Mario Rui cross. This tied things up in Sardinia as Napoli secured an important point for the title race.
They are now levelled on point with Inter Milan on the log, but the Nerazzurri have a game in hand. AC Milan tops the log presently with 56 points, two points above both Napoli and Inter after 26 rounds of games.
This bring to an end an interesting week where none of the teams in the top 5 on the log were able to secure a win.
Despite the fact that Napoli kicked off the match, it was Cagliari who started on the front foot. The hosts quickly settled into the match quicker and had the majority of the early possession. They also created a few chances in the first half before the Partenopei finally settled into the contest and had a few of their own.
Despite the electric flow of the game that see both sides take four shots each in the first 45 minutes, the interval ended goalless.
But Cagliari kept up their momentum in the second interval, leaving Spalletti’s side boxed in their own half.
Their pressure got rewarded in the 58th minute when Pereiro scored a speculative long shot. This was a shot David Ospina could and should have saved or parried away as the Colombian looked ashamed as the Rossoblu peeled off in celebration.
After going a goal down, Napoli stayed calm, and they continued to push for an equalizer. They were eventually rewarded three minutes to the end of the regulation time after several weak attempts.
Osimhen header brought them back into the match while both teams jostled in the remaining minutes of the match. As they could not find a winner, the game ended 1-1.
