Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Olise has explained why he snubbed England, Nigeria, and Algeria for Les Bleus.
He revealed this during a press conference ahead of the upcoming international break. Didier Deschamp called up the talented midfielder ahead of the clash against Azurri of Italy and Belgium as they regroup after their ouster from Euro 2020.
Olise, who joined Bayern Munich from Crystal Palace this summer, was born in London to a Nigerian father and a French mother.
Having been placed for the France under-23 squad at the Olympics, the London-born attacker has been given his first senior call-up by Deschamps to the France squad. He has the opportunity to prove his mettle as they prepare to face Italy and Belgium in the Nations League.
Since he was born in England, Olise also had the opportunity to represent the Three Lions, but the former Crystal Palace attacking midfielder is eligible to represent Les Bleus due to his mother being French, which he went for
The 22-year-old responded on his decision to play for France instead of his homeland, said he has always had a connection with Les Bleus, knocked out of the Euros by the eventual winners, Spain, who also broke their heart in the Olympics men’s football final to clinch the gold medal.
“I have always had a connection with the France national team; that is why I play for France.”
Olise had some difficulties with imperfect French during the press conference. The Bayern Munich man has yet to have similar difficulties in a Les Bleus shirt.
He announced his talent at the Olympics for Les Bleuets, and coach Thierry Henry said football fans have yet to see anything from the attacker. The former Reading winger was electric, as he was involved in 7 of France’s 11 goals at the tournament.
