Nigeria’s national team coach makes demands from fans

Newly appointed Super Eagles of Nigeria Head coach Finidi George took charge of his first competitive fixture when Nigeria hosted Bafana Bafana of South Africa on Friday for match day three of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Nigeria went into the game looking for their first victory in this campaign after two games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe ended in draws. The South Africans came into the game looking for revenge against the Nigerians, whom they lost to at the AFCON in February.

Finidi George was Jose Peseiro’s assistant coach at the Africa Cup of Nations, but he also took charge of two friendlies for Nigeria in March as a substantive coach before he was appointed full-time before the World Cup qualifiers.

A lot was expected from his side, but the Nigerians conceded a first-half goal to the South Africans on Friday before the hosts equalized early in the second half through Fisayo Dele-Basiru to help the Nigerians to a third consecutive draw in this World Cup campaign.

However, Nigerian fans were disappointed with the result, which jeopardized their chances of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, especially as the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to qualify for the last FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

Knowing the demands of the job at hand, with another fixture against the Benin Republic on Monday looming, Finidi George demanded that the fans give the coaching staff the space to execute the games and get the needed results.

“Allow us to do our jobs. We wanted to introduce Boniface and Moffi, but Semi had a knock, and we had to take him off and introduce Moffi and Onyedika. The fans and media would shout for different players, and if they didn’t perform well, the shout would be to take him off. Allow us to do our jobs.” Finidi George said.

Nigeria will have the opportunity to get their campaign back on track on Monday in a fixture against Benin Republic, coached by the team’s former coach, Gernot Rohr. The game will be played in Ivory Coast as the Benin Republic doesn’t have a FIFA standard stadium to execute the game.
