Neymar Departs Al-Hilal After Injury-Riddled Stint in Saudi Arabia

    January 28, 2025

Brazilian soccer sensation Neymar has parted ways with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, concluding an 18-month tenure plagued by injuries and unfulfilled potential. The club announced on Monday that Neymar’s contract was terminated by mutual consent, expressing gratitude for his contributions and wishing him success in future endeavours.

The 32-year-old joined Al-Hilal in August 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), lured by a staggering annual salary of approximately $104 million. His arrival in the Saudi Pro League was part of a broader movement that also saw the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema join the cash-rich league. However, Neymar managed to make only seven appearances for the club, as injuries repeatedly hindered his performance on the field.

Just two months into his stint in Saudi Arabia, Neymar suffered a devastating cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee while representing Brazil in a World Cup qualifier in October 2023. The injury sidelined him for nearly a year. Brief comebacks in October and November 2024 were short-lived, as a hamstring injury soon followed, keeping him off the pitch for the remainder of his time with Al-Hilal.

Al-Hilal’s coach, Jorge Jesus, acknowledged the challenges faced by the forward, stating, “He can no longer play at the level we are used to. Things have become difficult for him, unfortunately.”

The Brazilian forward first made a name for himself at Santos, scoring 107 goals in 177 appearances and earning the reputation as the heir to Pele. He then joined Barcelona in 2013, where he became an integral part of the attacking trio alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, helping the team clinch the Champions League title in 2015.

In 2017, Neymar moved to PSG for a record-breaking transfer fee of 220 million euros ($230 million), making it the most expensive transfer in football history. During his tenure at PSG, he won five Ligue 1 titles and, along with Kylian Mbappe, led the club to the Champions League final in the 2019-2020 season, ultimately losing to Bayern Munich.

Despite his setbacks in recent years, Neymar remains focused on his international career. Speaking to CNN earlier this month, he emphasized his determination to participate in the 2026 World Cup, stating, “I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance and I will do everything I can to play in it.”

Speculation about Neymar’s next move is already swirling. While Major League Soccer (MLS) teams in the United States have shown interest, reports in Brazil suggest that Santos, Neymar’s first professional club, is in discussions for a potential return. A comeback to Santos could serve as the final chapter for the player who remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 127 matches.

As Neymar contemplates his next steps, his legacy as one of football’s most enigmatic and gifted talents endures, even as his career faces the twilight.
