The Netherlands has progressed to the last eight of the 2024 European championship courtesy of a 3-0 win against a spirited Romania.
The Dutch had gone into the match as one of the best losers against Romania and topped their group, but they were sent packing by Ronald Koeman’s men after a brace from substitute Donyell Malen and Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo, who got his third goal of Euro 2024 to help the Netherlands reach the tournament’s quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years, opened the scoring with a brilliant finish midway through the first half when he cut inside before unleashing a drive into the bottom corner.
Despite missing numerous chances after that, The Netherlands ensured they did not risk paying for it when substitute Malen stabbed in late on from Gakpo’s ball.
The Borussia Dortmund striker then wrapped up an impressive win for the Netherlands, punishing Romania for committing players forward, as he charged in on goal before slotting home.
After their loss against Austria, it was a much-improved performance from the Netherlands.
The Orange, who dealt with early pressure from an enthusiastic Romania backed by their loud and colorful fans, produced early pressing that forced their opponents into mistakes, giving them a scare when Dennis Man fizzed a shot just over.
They eventually settled the nerves as Gakpo’s goal changed the pattern of the game.
They had a chance to make it two just before the break, but Xavi Simons fired wide.
Although a goal behind, Romania came out fighting in the second half, but the Netherlands had the final say.
The Netherlands had better chances as Memphis Depay failed to score from close range. Virgil van Dijk hit the post with a header, while Gakpo’s shot after a driving run was pushed behind.
But Malen got his brace within the final 10 minutes to avoid any late drama.
The Netherlands can now look forward to facing Turkey, who shocked Austria in their last eight.
