David de Gea is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and his talent has been recognized by Manchester United, who signed him to a lucrative contract extension in 2019. The Spanish international’s deal reportedly earns him around £375,000 per week, which makes him one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League. This is a testament to how much United values de Gea’s contributions on and off the pitch.
However, some believe that de Gea’s new contract may not have been worth it. In recent seasons, his form has dipped significantly compared to his previous high standards. Some fans and pundits argue that he has become error-prone and unreliable in crucial moments, costing United points and matches.
Despite the player’s performance not being the same as before, the red devils want to keep him, and for weeks, meetings have been held for a possible contract extension.
Manchester United is going through a transition period with the whole issue of the possible sale by the Glazers, therefore, until this scenario is cleared up, the club cannot offer large amounts of money, De Gea stated that he was aware of this and that he agreed to a salary cut to remain at the club.
However, according to reports, De Gea considered that the first offer presented by the club was very low and not fair. Negotiations have continued but are not advancing at a good pace.
De Gea told Sky Sports that he wants to stay at the club. “Of course, I’ve been here many, many years enjoying every moment in this club, playing many, many games. Of course is great to be here, it’s a massive club, I love the club, and I’m really happy here of course. It has been the same over the years, a lot of noise about everything in this club but the players; we just focus on games.
“We want to finish in the top four. Like I say we have many, many games so we have to be really focused on training well, recovering well, helping the team, and that’s the most important thing, rather than contracts or anything.”
