West Ham United manager David Moyes has bemoaned the Hammers to 1 loss to Frankfort in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final clash played at the London Stadium.
West Ham, who are playing in their first European semi-final since 1976, started the game against a German side who knocked out Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
Frankfurt defeated Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate after beating the Blaugrana club 3-2 at Camp Nou, while the Hammers got past French side, Lyon.
Ansgar Knauff scored the opening goal in the first minute of the game, while Michail Antonio scored the first goal for the Hammers and the second goal of the match to equalize 20 minutes later.
Japanese international Daichi Kamada scored the winner in the 54th minute, and manager David Moyes didn’t hide his disappointment in the result.
“Not what we wanted – we didn’t play well enough to get a result tonight, but it’s still there. It’s not gone. We’ll go to the second leg probably not fancied, and do what we can to still make it. I thought we deserved to get back in the game, and if we had shown enough quality in the final third, we might’ve got back in front, but we didn’t. Started slow in the second half and gave away a poor goal for the second.” Moyes said.
West Ham United defeated Frankfurt in the semi-final on their way to the 1976 European Cup Winners’ Cup final, but they will need to do it the hard way if they are to replicate this feat. They play the second leg next week Thursday in Germany, but the first is a Premier League tie at the weekend against London rivals Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Rangers lost to RB Leipzig in Germany courtesy of a stunning strike from Angelino late in the second UEFA Europa League semi-final.
