Mikel Arteta admits that getting rid of Aubameyang was the best for the club

A year ago, Arsenal shocked the soccer world when they terminated the contract of their highest-paid player Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.

At the time, not much information was given about why the club made this decision. It was alleged that Auba had committed repeated disciplinary offenses that would have unleashed the wrath of boss Mikel Arteta.

In an interview with Jamie Carragher for Sky Sports, Arteta has finally shed some light on why he decided to remove Auba from the club.

“First of all, I didn’t make that decision; we made it as a club. Obviously, there is my recommendation and what I feel we must do to get where we want. But I would not like to single out a single player. I think it was with several players. It was part of the strategy of what we are trying to build.

“I’m sorry, but we want to go even faster, and there is no time, be it a player or a staff member, for someone to damage the club, and we made that decision,” said Arteta.

Apparently, the player believed he was bigger than the club and did not have the same work discipline as the rest of his teammates, as Mohamed Elneny, Egyptian midfielder for the London team, mentioned in an interview for Times Sport: “We do not allow big egos ( at Arsenal). This is the wardrobe we have now. Everyone loves each other, and everyone works for each other. This is what really makes our squad really strong, because we don’t have egos in the team.”
