Former Liverpool legend Michael Owen thinks Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are the teams who have a real shot at winning the Premier League title this season.
Tottenham and Liverpool are currently occupying the top two spots in the Premier League table with 21 points to their names. Chelsea is placed at the third spot with 19 points whereas Manchester City are placed at a distant 11th place with four points lesser than Chelsea.
Although there are a lot of other teams like Leicester City, Southampton, West Ham, and the Wolves, who are a lot closer to the summit than Manchester City are, Owen believes only one of the four teams picked by him are capable of winning the Premier League title.
“If ever there was a season where you think a team could win it who you didn’t fancy at the start, it’s this one. It’s wide open right now,” Owen told BT Sport.
“But I still narrow it down to four teams: Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham. Chelsea have a great shout,” he added.
Owen is particularly impressed by the way Chelsea have played in this season and he also praised Frank Lampard for handling the squad so well.
“Chelsea are looking very good, Lampard has got them playing really well. They’re obviously doing well in the Premier League, but they’re flying in Europe. They made nine changes against Sevilla and were still brilliant.
“What a squad they’ve got.”
Owen also went on to speak about the depth of their squad as Olivier Giroud, who is not even their first team striker, went on to score four goals against Sevilla during Chelsea’s Champions League encounter with them.
“Giroud is probably the third choice striker at Chelsea and that shows their strength in depth. He has much better movement than he’s given credit for. It was a masterclass of finishing. It was pure class from Giroud tonight.”
The 11th gameweek of the Premier League will kick off on Saturday (December 5). All four teams have home fixtures this weekend. While Chelsea and Liverpool host Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers at home respectively, Tottenham will play Arsenal with Manchester City taking on Fulham.
