PSG star Kylian Mbappe has become the youngest player in the history of the Champions League to reach the landmark of 20 goals, a record which was previously held by Lionel Messi.
Mbappe converted a penalty in the 42nd minute of their Champions League fixture against Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday, to give them a 3-0 lead in the match after Neymar had already scored twice.
Mbappe has achieved the record at the age of 21 years and 355 days. Messi had achieved the feat when he was 22 years and 266 days old.
Three other popular figures — Raul, Alessandro Del Piero and Karim Benzema — appear in the top five of this list.
Mbappe achieved this feat just days after he reached his 100th goal for PSG in the match against Montpellier.
Wednesday’s match between the two sides began 14 minutes in as it was halted on Tuesday due to racist allegations against the fourth official, who had called Basaksehir assistant Pierre Webo as “the black one”.
PSG and Basaksehir sent out a strong anti-racism message by kneeling together around the centre circle, prior to the resumption of the match on Wednesday.
The players from both sides also wore shirts that had written “no to racism” written on them during practice whereas Parc des Princes also showed their support for Webo, who is a former Cameroon international forward working for Basaksehir currently as part of the coaching staff.
Tuesday’s fourth official Sebastian Coltescu could be facing a ban of at least 10 matches under Article 14 of UEFA’s disciplinary measures and procedures.
Article 14 states that “any person under the scope of Article 3 who insults the human dignity of a person or group of persons on whatever grounds, including skin colour, race, religion, ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation, incurs a suspension lasting at least 10 matches or a specified period of time, or any other appropriate sanction.”
