Despite having a star-studded side that includes the likes of the Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Motta, and Thiago Silva, former PSG defender, Maxwell said, all eyes were on former England captain, David Beckham.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Le Beau Jeu, the former left-back said he and his other teammates looked up to Beckham, who joined the top Ligue 1 side in early 2013.
Beckham showed his aura in and stood out as a good example despite coming to the capital city towards the end of his career.
Maxwell, who had played with Inter Milan and Barcelona where he had been league winner, told Robbie Thomson in a PSG special of the Le Beau Jeu podcast that Beckham’s teammates couldn’t realise how big was the opportunity to play with the former England star.
Maxwell said other teammates were his fans, but are glad to see him close and learn from his experience at big clubs and in big games.
While stating that he couldn’t imagine paying beside the celebrity footballer, he said the feeling the teammates had was good, and they are happy to be around him.
He said such an opportunity was amazing, and it changed PSG’s image.
Also lauding the Beckham is PSG’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, who told France Football that although he was the big spenders for a short while, he transformed the club with his presence.
While saying that he can’t do without mentioning Beckham in the club’s history, the president lauded him for his commitment to training and attention to detail all the time. He added that he was determined to succeed, his knack for teamwork and aura were extremely precious assets to the club.
The former Real Madrid midfielder hung his booth at the age of 38 with a Ligue 1 winners’ medal. His final appearance for PSG was an emotional one when captained PSG against Brest at the Parc des Princes on May 18, 2013.
