Mohamed Salah has surpassed Didier Drogba for most goal contributions by an African player in Premier League history in 72 fewer games after scoring a brace in Liverpool’s 6-0 thrashing of Leeds United at the Anfield stadium on Wednesday evening.
The goals are the Egyptian’s first set of strikes since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Egypt national team finished second in the final where they lost to Sadio Mane’s Senegal.
The Senegalese forward also scored his first goals since the end of the African Cup of Nations campaign in Cameroon by scoring a brace of his in the second half.
The Reds were without injured Diogo Jota as well as Roberto Firmino, but January signing Luiz Diaz was tormenting from the start, and it wasn’t long before Liverpool broke the deadlock.
Stuart Dallas handled the ball in the box in the minutes of the game, and Mohamed salah’s stepped up to put the ball in the back of the net. It wasn’t long after that Jurgen Klopp’s side doubled their advantage. Salah provided the assist for Joel Matip’s goal in the 30th minute.
Salah made it 3-0 five minutes later as he poked home from another penalty, but the last three goals didn’t come until the last ten minutes of the game as Salah scored in the 80th and 90th minute before Virgil Van Dijk’s late sixth goal.
In other games, Burnley defeated Tottenham Hotspur by one goal to zero in a shocking result from Turf Moor. Spurs manager Antonio Conte was furious with his fourth loss in five matches.
“We are working a lot, we are working hard, I think we are doing everything to try to improve, but it’s not enough, very frustrating. First time in my life, four defeats in five. Maybe I am not so good. Tottenham called me to improve, but I’m honest, and I can’t close my eyes. I want to finish my season. I hate to lose; we lost four in the last five games. This is unacceptable. I won’t accept it.” Conte said.
Meanwhile, Watford returned to their losing ways after losing 4-1 to Crystal Palace at the Vicarage Road on Wednesday.
