Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag is keen on sorting a deal for Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana this week after Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea announced his departure from Old Trafford.
De Gea, who started his career at Atletico Madrid, joined United in 2011 for £18.9m and ran out of contract this June with Manchester United choosing not to renew. This is amid the rumours linking the Red Devils to Inter Milan’s Onana.
However, De Gea on Saturday pull the plugs on his Old Trafford stay on Saturday when he released a statement on his social media handle.
“I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love for the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. Manchester will always be in my heart; Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me.” De Gea said.
An extension was initially expected, but when the initial terms agreed upon were changed, it resulted in De Gea reconsidering his stance. He has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, and Manchester United have made two bids for Andre Onana already.
De Gea won the Premier League, FA Cup, Uefa Europa League, and two Carabao Cups at United and was named United Player of the Season four times, including two Premier League Golden Gloves, with the second one coming last season as he kept 17 clean sheets.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are now close to signing André Onana, with the deal expected to be done at the end of the new week as personal terms have been agreed with the goalkeeper.
