In a classic David versus Goliath encounter, Manchester United reasserted their dominance with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium in the FA Cup fourth round on Monday. The win provided a much-needed boost for the 12-time FA Cup champions, currently struggling in the Premier League and out of European contention.
Manchester United’s performance was a blend of persistence and skill, underscored by the contributions of Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes. Dalot’s opener in the 22nd minute set the tone for the night. The move started with Marcus Rashford’s blocked shot, which he then passed to Dalot.
The Portuguese defender showed composure, taking a touch before firing the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the box. This goal, according to Dalot, instilled more confidence in the team, helping them control the pace of the game.
However, it was Fernandes who sealed the deal in the 74th minute with a penalty, doubling United’s lead after Wigan’s Liam Shaw fouled him. Despite the comfortable lead, United’s manager Erik ten Hag reflected on missed opportunities, saying the team should have scored more given their creation of several clear-cut chances. The team’s attacking prowess was evident, with 33 shots taken, 14 of which were on target.
The game wasn’t without its tense moments. Rashford thought he had scored, only for Wigan’s goalkeeper Sam Tickle to make a save on the line. Forward Rasmus Hojlund and winger Alejandro Garnacho also came close to scoring, with Garnacho hitting the bar.
United’s victory was also a testament to their resilience in away matches, having previously faced challenges on the road. This win at Wigan marked a departure from their recent away form, which included eight defeats in 14 matches since last season’s FA Cup final loss to Manchester City.
For Wigan Athletic, the night was challenging but not without merit. Manager Shaun Maloney expressed pride in his team’s performance against a formidable opponent. Wigan, known for their 2013 FA Cup upset against Manchester City, showed determination but ultimately couldn’t match United’s quality.
Looking ahead, United is set to face the winner of the third-round replay between Newport County and Eastleigh F.C. As they progress in the FA Cup, the team and its fans will hope for a continuation of this winning form, perhaps eyeing another prestigious FA Cup to add to their collection.
Manchester United’s victory over Wigan Athletic not only secures their place in the next round of the FA Cup but also serves as a morale booster for a team in need of a lift. With Ten Hag at the helm, United’s journey in the tournament is one to watch closely, as they aim to reclaim their status as one of England’s top football clubs.
