Manchester United are expected to have a big transfer window as they will allow their new manger Erik ten Hag to have the players that he wants. So the player that for now tops their shortlist is Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, the youngster who rose to fame under Ten Hag in Ajax. While the rumours suggest that the centre back may eventually join United this summer, nothing has been mentioned by the Ajax hierarchy.
The 20-year-old has already shown great signs and has the potential and the ability to be one of the best defenders in the world. Ten Hag who has seen him rise through to prominence will surely have an upper hand in convincing him to join Manchester United. The Reds Devils are keen to build the team around young and talented players under the tutelage of a new manager who can guide this team back to where they belong.
Despite all the rumours, Timber is still not convinced and is far from making up his mind about his future. He is concerned if a move away from Ajax means getting lesser game time which will only hamper his progress and development as a player. So a move to a bigger club is concerning for the youngster.
In a recent interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf revealed about his future as he was on duty with the Netherlands national team. He highlights how Ajax is also a big club and can be a better option for him. He said, “In the end, my gut feeling will be the deciding factor. The picture has to be right. You can go to a big club. But if you’re not going to play there it’s better to stay with Ajax. And Ajax is also a big club.”
Timber then added a very viable point of Ajax being a top club in Europe as they also play in the Champions League regularly and that is something he has to sacrifice this year if he decides to join Manchester United. So it is a call that he has to make as he points out how he feels he is not done at Ajax.
“We play football in the Champions League and I play there together with the best players in the Netherlands. That is not nothing. Of course, I can develop further [at Ajax]. I am 100 per cent sure of that. I don’t feel like I’m done at the club. But I can also develop at other clubs.
‘I am now focusing on the upcoming international matches and then go on holiday. Then I’ll have to think about it some more,” the young defender concluded.
Timber can be a great option for the future for Manchester United, the young centre back has great qualities and all he needs is a bit of polish, something that Ten Hag is an expert. The 20-year-old has already played six times for the Netherlands and has featured in a couple of seasons in Europe.
