Manchester United faced their arch rivals Manchester City in one of the most iconic derbies in recent times and once again Pep Guardiola’s City smashed the Red Devils as they won 6-3 courtesy of hattricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. Whereas Antony scored a splendid goal with Anthony Martial scored a brilliant brace.
However, the goals from United were nothing more than consolation prizes as they have been second best in this fixture for some years now as Manchester City has dominated the Premier League under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola. It was heartbreaking to see United fans leaving the stadium as Haaland pumped in the goals.
But after the match, United midfielder Bruno Fernandes had the honesty to share how the players had already lost the fixture with their attitude and mindset right before the start of the match. The Portuguese international shared his thoughts on MUTV as he said, “I think the attitude and the belief from the beginning was not the best, think that caused us many problems and made us concede early goals. I think the second half was much better, we kept control more. Whenever we had the ball we were braver.”
The former Sporting CP man highlighted how they scored a couple of goals when they decided to take risks and not give up. However he also shared that giving chances to this City team will end up in disaster as they are very ruthless and that is what happened. “Obviously, we were down so we needed to take some risks and when we take those risks we scored straight away, try to go a little bit more and concede more goals. Against teams like City, you cannot give them that much space.”
Lastly he revealed that the team as whole knew that this is going to be a tough game but they have won tough games. However he highlights that the mentality and the attitude of the players was not right.
“After this result, we knew it was going to be a tough game, but we’ve had tough games before and we have won it, so I think it’s about mentality, attitude and togetherness and belief in the process. It’s a good thing [that there are many games in October],” Bruno Fernandes revealed.
