It has been a transfer window full of surprises and recently the biggest surprise was Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford. The Portuguese talisman was closing in on a move to join Manchester City but arch-rivals Manchester United hijacked the deal.
While most people are excited to see Ronaldo return to Old Trafford, some have raised questions over the club’s approach. It is mainly directed to the former Juventus star who is 36 right now. However, United Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels that all the criticism regarding his age will boost Ronaldo more to perform.
Although it is sure that Ronaldo will don the Manchester United jersey again, the deal is yet to be finalised. There are some paperworks remaining and hence the club have not managed to unveil the Portuguese talisman.
“Hopefully we can get the paperwork sorted and announce it. He is a great player, a great human being,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports before his side’s Premier League match against Wolves.
“I’m excited to keep building this squad. He will bring something completely different. I think everyone is looking forward to having Cristiano in, the paperwork done and to work with him.”
United have done great business this season as they have roped in long term target Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. Then, they have snapped up Raphael Varane from Real Madrid and lastly they have secured the services of Cristiano Ronaldo. Solskjaer feels that it has been a well rounded transfer window for the club as they have signed some really talented players who have the experience of winning silverware and will help United end the barren run.
“I think it just adds more confidence and belief in what we’re doing, what we’re building. We’ve gradually improved, signed younger players, we’ve signed Jadon [Sancho], who’s also a young player, Raphael [Varane] who’s so experienced and won everything.
“Hopefully Cristiano can come in and show what he’s done in his career. We know he’s a more experienced player than when he was here last time, he’s evolved and had an unbelievable career.
“I’m sure he likes all the talk about him being too old, make it personal and he’ll show what he can do.”
After a stunning 5-1 start to their Premier League campaign against Leeds, the Red Devils have slowed down. They were held 1-1 by Southampton at Old Trafford followed by a scrappy 1-0 win over the Wolves. If things go as per plan, Cristiano Ronaldo will be in action for United in their next league fixture against Newcastle United.
