Former Manchester City fullback Joao Cancelo has joined Bayern Munich on a loan deal with a buyback clause. He was once seen as a top player donning the Manchester City blue as he won the two Premier League titles and also got selected into the PFA Teams of the Year twice. Cancelo has been sensational especially with his attacking instincts from wide areas.
But ever since the World Cup, Cancelo has lost his form and also his place in the starting eleven. Kyle Walker surpassed him and that created a tension between him and Pep Guardiola. When in form he has been one of the best fullbacks in the world but the recent fallout with Guardiola saw him leave the club and join Bundesliga record champions, Bayern Munich.
Cancelo shared his excitement after joining the German outfit and also highlighted his eagerness to play alongside these top players. “FC Bayern is a great club, one of the best in the world, and it’s an enormous motivation for me to now play alongside these extraordinary players in a team. I know that this club, this team lives for titles and wins titles every year. I’m also driven by the hunger for success. I‘ll give my best for FC Bayern,” the Portugal international told Bayern’s official website.
Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidzic shared that they have been monitoring Cancelo for a long time and feels that the player is ideal for their system especially with his attacking instincts as he believes that the fullback will be a great fit and also help them in the coming week where they face the big match against Paris Saint Germain.
“We’re very happy that João Cancelo will now play for FC Bayern. We’ve signed him on loan now and have the possibility of signing him permanently in the summer. João is a player we’ve been thinking about for a while now because we very much appreciate his qualities. He’s the optimal fit in our system with his attacking style of play and dynamism, and his mentality and experience fit very well in our team. I’m convinced João will help us in the coming weeks and months where we want to win titles,” Salihamidzic explained the move.
Joao Cancelo will spend the rest of the season with Bayern and will look to help them win the Bundesliga and the Champions League title. His mentality and exceptional attributes will be of great use as Julian Nagelsmann really enjoys when he has players who can stretch the play from wide areas. Cancelo’s technical abilities will be an added bonus for the Bavarians.
If he leaves a long lasting mark in the Bayern red, then the club may opt to sign him permanently as there is a €70 million clause present in the current contract but for now he is on loan till the end of this season.
