Manchester City Faces Injury Crisis as Savinho, Akanji Join Sidelines

Manchester City is grappling with a deepening injury crisis after winger Savinho and defender Manuel Akanji joined the club’s growing list of sidelined players following Wednesday’s 2-1 League Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

With injuries accumulating, City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed he currently has just 13 available players ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Savinho was stretchered off in the 62nd minute against Tottenham with what appeared to be an ankle injury, leaving Guardiola with further concerns about his lineup depth. Meanwhile, Akanji, who was initially expected to start the match, experienced a muscular issue during the warm-up, ruling him out just before kickoff.

“We have 13 players available, so we are in real difficulty,” Guardiola told reporters post-match. “The guys that play, they finish most of them with problems, and we’ll see how they recover.”

The recent setbacks come on top of a string of injuries to key City players. Star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne remains out of action, alongside defensive stalwart Kyle Walker and versatile midfielder Rodri. Additionally, young forward Oscar Bobb, speedy winger Jeremy Doku, and playmaker Jack Grealish have all missed recent games due to fitness concerns.

The accumulation of injuries has brought Guardiola and his squad into an unusual predicament, with the manager acknowledging that this situation is unprecedented in his nine-year tenure at the club.

“I think we are in trouble because in nine years we’ve never been in the situation with so many injuries,” Guardiola remarked. “Hopefully, he [Savinho] is not in danger, but we will see.”

Akanji’s unexpected withdrawal adds further strain on a depleted defensive line. Guardiola explained, “Akanji, yesterday, I didn’t know it. In the last action, he felt something in the muscular part of his body, and today in the warm-up, he didn’t feel good.”

Currently leading the Premier League by a single point over Liverpool, Manchester City’s ambitions to maintain its competitive edge could be tested as its bench options grow thinner. With Bournemouth awaiting them this weekend, Guardiola may face challenging tactical decisions, potentially relying on youth players or versatile midfielders in defense to cover the gaps.

As City’s injury list lengthens, supporters are left hoping for swift recoveries across the squad to preserve the team’s momentum in domestic and European campaigns. Guardiola, no stranger to managing high-stakes situations, now faces the additional challenge of adapting strategies to navigate an unanticipated injury storm.
