Manchester City Eyes Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi as Potential Replacement for Julian Alvarez

Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Celtic’s dynamic striker, Kyogo Furuhashi, as they search for a suitable replacement for Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez’s significant move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, which involved a substantial transfer fee, has left City in need of bolstering their attacking options to support their leading centre-forward, Erling Haaland.

According to reports from The Times’ Michael Grant, Manchester City has identified Furuhashi as a potential candidate to fill the void left by Alvarez. The 24-year-old Japanese forward has been “under consideration”, although the Scottish Premier League champions would expect a club-record fee for his transfer.

This expectation is based on Furuhashi’s consistent performance, impact on the field, and growing popularity since his arrival at Celtic in 2021, where he was signed for £4.5 million.

City’s interest in Furuhashi stems not only from his on-field prowess but also from his familiarity with personnel at the Etihad Stadium. Juanma Lillo, Furuhashi’s former head coach at Vissel Kobe, currently serves as Pep Guardiola’s number two at Manchester City.

During Lillo’s tenure at Vissel Kobe, Furuhashi thrived, making 13 appearances, scoring five goals, and providing five assists in a seven-month spell. This existing relationship could influence City’s approach, potentially making the transition smoother for the player if the transfer materializes.

However, Manchester City faces challenges in securing a deal for Furuhashi. While they recognize that the proposed €75 million initial transfer fee, which could escalate to €95 million with add-ons, is “too good to turn down”, they must also respect the player’s aspirations to become a mainstay first-choice striker.

Furuhashi’s desire for regular first-team football aligns with City’s philosophy of fielding a competitive and consistent starting lineup, but the substantial financial commitment required poses a significant hurdle.

Moreover, Manchester City’s search for Alvarez’s replacement has been complicated by the challenge of finding a player who meets their high standards and does not have expectations of immediate and consistent first-team involvement. The club has maintained a shortlist of potential candidates, with Furuhashi being one of the final two names. This indicates a serious consideration, but no definite commitment has been made to pursuing his transfer this summer.

The potential signing of Furuhashi could provide Manchester City with a versatile and effective forward option alongside Erling Haaland. Furuhashi’s track record at Celtic shows his ability to make a significant impact, and his inclusion in the squad could bolster City’s offensive capabilities. However, the hefty transfer fee required by Celtic necessitates a careful assessment by City, who may also explore other options should Furuhashi’s price tag prove prohibitive.
