Manchester United secured a dramatic 3-3 draw against FC Porto in the Europa League, thanks to Harry Maguire’s stoppage-time header in a pulsating encounter. Erik ten Hag’s side, twice in the lead through Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, showed resilience after falling behind, and despite being reduced to 10 men following Bruno Fernandes’ late red card, salvaged a point at the Estádio do Dragão.
The match began at a blistering pace, with Porto applying early pressure. Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, was called into action within minutes, denying Galeno’s effort. However, United struck first in the seventh minute. Christian Eriksen played in Rashford, who weaved through the Porto defense and fired a low shot that slipped past Diogo Costa to give the visitors an early lead.
United continued to threaten, with Porto’s defense struggling to cope with Rashford’s direct runs. A string of near-misses kept the pressure on, and soon United doubled their advantage. Hojlund, marking his first start of the season, capitalized on another combination from Eriksen and Rashford, slotting home from the left-hand channel. Though Costa managed to get a hand to it, the ball crept over the line, putting United 2-0 up.
Porto, however, responded with tenacity. A mistake from Noussair Mazraoui, heading the ball towards his own goal, allowed Pepe to halve the deficit with a close-range header. Minutes later, Samu Omorodion made it 2-2 with a powerful header, ensuring Porto were level by halftime.
The second half started poorly for United, as Rashford was unable to continue. Omorodion, full of confidence after his first-half goal, found the net again early after the break, seizing on a cross from Pepe to give Porto the lead for the first time in the match.
Despite the setback, United pressed for an equalizer, with substitute Alejandro Garnacho and Mazraoui both testing Costa, who made a series of fine saves. However, United’s task became even more daunting when Fernandes, already on a yellow card, was dismissed for dangerous play with 10 minutes remaining, marking his second red card in consecutive games, though his previous dismissal against Tottenham had been overturned.
Porto nearly sealed the win, but Onana kept United alive with a crucial save from Deniz Gul. Deep into stoppage time, United’s persistence paid off. A Christian Eriksen corner found Harry Maguire, who powered a header past Costa to make it 3-3 and rescue a point for the visitors.
In a game filled with twists, United displayed grit and determination to avoid defeat, earning a valuable point that keeps them in the running in the Europa League group stage.
