Seven-time capped Tottenham midfielder James Maddison has bemoaned his ouster from England’s final Euro 2024 squad list after he was omitted from the last 26-man list by manager Gareth Southgate, forcing the midfielder to exit the Three Lions camp on Wednesday evening.
James Maddison had an impressive start to the season for Tottenham Hotspur, but he suffered an injury that disrupted his performances, a situation he blames for his drop.
“I trained well and worked hard all week, but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set, which gave Gareth a decision to make,” said Maddison. I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26-man squad as I feel I bring something different and had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany”. Maddison said.
The midfielder said he respects the manager’s decision and that he has no doubts that he’ll be back. He ended the season with 9 assists and four goals in 28 matches in the Premier League for Spurs.
Similarly, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish have also been left out of the final team to Germany.
The 31-year-old central defender also had an injury problem earlier this year, which forced him out of Manchester United’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May.
The defender explained that despite his best efforts, he wasn’t able to shake off the calf injury and was devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.
Other players who have missed out on the Euros list for England are Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, Liverpool’s duo of Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones.
