James Maddison’s early goal proved decisive as Tottenham Hotspur secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, ending a 105-day wait for a home Premier League win. Maddison, returning from injury, capitalized on a rebound in the 13th minute to hand Spurs a much-needed triumph.
The win lifted Tottenham to 12th place in the league table with 30 points, overtaking United, who slipped to 15th with 29 points. The result added to the struggles of United manager Ruben Amorim, who has now lost eight of his 14 Premier League games since taking charge at Old Trafford. It also marked the first time since the 1989-90 season that United suffered a league double defeat to Spurs.
Maddison’s return to the starting lineup alongside first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario provided a boost for Spurs, who also welcomed back Destiny Udogie, Wilson Odobert, and Brennan Johnson to the bench. Manager Ange Postecoglou acknowledged the importance of the win.
“It was important we won today,” Postecoglou said. “We’ve had it pretty tough for the past two and a half months. We feel, and I certainly feel, there’s a massive opportunity in the back half of the year.”
For United, the defeat compounded a difficult week following news that Amad Diallo, one of their few bright spots this season, is likely to miss the rest of the campaign. Their bench on Sunday was filled with youth, with nine players aged 19 or under.
Despite a lackluster display, United had chances. Rasmus Hojlund forced an early save from Vicario, who also denied Alejandro Garnacho’s follow-up attempt. Maddison’s goal came after Son Heung-min’s volleyed cross found Lucas Bergvall, whose shot was parried by Andre Onana into Maddison’s path.
Garnacho missed a golden opportunity to equalize, lifting his shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Mathys Tel, making his debut for Spurs, also struggled in front of goal, failing to convert a Djed Spence cross.
Before the match, Tottenham fans staged a protest against Chairman Daniel Levy’s management of the club. While one victory won’t erase their frustrations, it provided a much-needed step forward after Spurs were eliminated from both domestic cups last week.
On the defensive end, Spurs showed resilience despite United’s growing pressure. Vicario, playing his first game in nearly three months, made crucial saves from Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee. Ultimately, Tottenham held firm to secure consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time in 16 months.
United manager Amorim admitted his concerns about the team’s form but remained confident.
“I am not worried. I understand our fans and what the media think about it. I hate to lose – that feeling is the worst,” Amorim said. “I am confident in my work. The place on the table is my worry. I am not worried about me.”
With 13 games remaining, both Spurs and United still have hopes in the Europa League, but their Premier League struggles highlight the challenges ahead.
