England defender Harry Maguire speaks very highly of his compatriot and teammate Luke Shaw. He feels that there is no reason why Shaw cannot be the best player on the pitch for club and country. The Manchester United left back continues to have superb Euros as England progress to the semifinals.
Shaw has been one of the brightest sparks for Gareth Southgate’s men at the Euros. He has added that extra width on the left side and has been a great help for Raheem Sterling ahead of him on the left channel. The former Southampton man has managed to carry forward his club form to the international level.
Shaw came up with a top notch performance as England took on Ukraine. The 25-year-old drilled two perfect assists guiding the Three Lions with a 4-0 win over Andriy Shevchenko’s men. Ahead of the all important semifinals, Maguire spoke very highly about his teammate.
“I think first and foremost his ability has always been there,” the centre-back told a pre-match press conference before the Three Lions’ clash with the Danes. “He has great ability, he has every attribute to be one of the best left-backs in the world.
“I would probably say the main difference I feel within Luke is his mentality, in terms of pushing himself and really the demands he is putting on himself now to not just be a six out of 10 in each and every game, not to play comfortably.
“It’s to go and push on and be himself and push himself to be the best player on the pitch, because there’s no reason why he can’t do that with all the attributes and ability that he has,” the England defender signed off.
Shaw did not start in England’s opening game against Croatia. However, he started against Scotland and from there he gathered momentum. Shaw allowed Southgate with a great attacking outlet from the left channel. He showed great understanding with Sterling and was precise with his crosses in the penalty area.
He will once again look to combine with Sterling in attack, also his understanding with Maguire will be important against a potent Danish side. Once again in the semifinals, the English fans will be hoping to see Luke Shaw in his known element marauding down the left flank and drilling in those crosses.
