Romelu Lukaku is about to compete for his return to Inter Milan on loan from Chelsea after both parties have an agreement in place.
Sky Sport Italia and Sportitalia report that the deal is around €8m plus bonuses as the paperwork is being drawn up.
Lukaku, a Belgian international, had only left the Nerazzurri a year ago for €113m. But immediately expressed regret about the decision in an interview with Skye Sports in December, saying he wanted to return to San Siro.
This seems to have made it easy for the Nerazzurri to get the deal done. They also had to quickly wrap it up by June 30 to continue to benefit from the tax breaks on his salary.
According to reliable sources, the bonuses are tied to the objectives of the club rather than the player. It means Chelsea could get up to €4-5m as a bonus if Inter wins the Scudetto, Champions League, or Europa League.
Since these are not tied to a player’s performance, how Lukaku fares at Inter is irrelevant to the payment as there will be no option to buy, let alone an obligation. Thus, it can be said to be a dry loan.
In a bid to ensure that the move goes through, Lukaku has also accepted a significant pay cut, and he is expected to have his medical at least by Friday.
In another development, Inter have announced that their manager Simone Inzaghi has signed a new two-year deal.
This extended the stay of the former Lazio manager at San Siro till 2024.
In a swift reaction, Lukaku ‘liked’ that post on Instagram, further proving his desperation to get back to Serie A.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Lukaku’s lawyer Sebastien Ledure arrived on Tuesday morning at the club HQ hiding in the back of CEO Beppe Marotta’s car to get the deal done.
